Communicating with Parents on Mazhali

From private messages to handling leave requests — everything you need to know about staying in sync with parents through Mazhali.

Mazhali gives you two tools for staying in sync with parents: private messaging and leave requests. Both are built into the app — no need to use personal phone numbers or external messaging apps.

Private Messaging

Finding the Messages Tab

Tap Messages in the bottom navigation. You’ll see a list of your conversations — one thread per contact.

Who Can You Message?

You can message any parent of a child in your assigned class. You can also message your school admin directly.

Sending a Message

Tap a parent’s name to open the thread, type your message (up to 2,000 characters), and tap send. The parent receives a push notification on their device.

Receiving Messages from Parents

When a parent sends you a message, you’ll see an unread badge on the Messages tab and receive a push notification. Tap the notification or open the Messages tab to read and reply.

Replies happen in the same thread — conversations are persistent, so you can scroll back through the history at any time.

Handling Leave Requests

How Leave Requests Work

When a parent submits a leave request from their app, the child’s attendance is automatically marked Excused for the dates they specify. You do not need to approve leave requests — they take effect immediately.

What You See

You receive a push notification when a leave request is submitted. On the attendance screen for the relevant day, you’ll see the child marked as Excused — Sick or Excused — Vacation, along with any reason the parent provided.

No Further Action Needed

Leave requests are fully automatic on your end. Your only job is to be aware that the child will be absent, which you can verify from the attendance list.

When Not to Use the App for Communication

For emergencies — a child is injured, there’s an urgent safety concern — do not use in-app messaging. Response times vary, and parents may not see a message immediately. Use your school’s phone number for anything that requires an immediate response. Your admin can provide the school’s emergency contact number if you don’t have it.

Can You Message Parents Outside Your Class?

No. Messaging is scoped to your assigned classes. You can only message parents of children in your class and your school admin. This is intentional — it keeps communication structured and avoids cross-class confusion.
